Blackfriars friary was built in 1256. It was where religious people called friars lived, worked and prayed.

They were called black friars because they wore dark cloaks with hoods.

In 1536 King Henry VIII started closing all the religious houses in the country. This included friaries and all the monasteries. The friary in Cardiff was closed down in 1538.

In the late 19th century the Marquess of Bute put down some tiles that looked like the ones that would have been on the floor in the original friary. There are only a few tiles left. Can you find any? They feature pictures of plants and animals.
