Five of those named on the memorial died on the same day in 1915, when their steamer, SS Gertrude, collided with a passenger liner in the Irish Sea while sailing from Ellesmere Port to Waterford.

Three other local men died – including two cousins – when the cargo ship SS Lynburn sank in 1917 after hitting a mine which a German submarine had laid in the Irish Sea.
