On a bright moonlit night in Pentrefoelas, one of the sons of the farmer who lived in Llwyn Onn was on his way to see his girlfriend at Clogwyn-y-Gwyn. As he crossed a field near his sweetheart’s house, he came across some fairies who seemed to be having a party by the side of a lake. He watched them, and became captivated by their beautiful music, singing and dancing. It didn’t take him long to join in!

The farmer’s son thought he was in a dream. He found himself in a different land – more beautiful than anything he had ever seen – where everyone seemed to spend their time dancing, singing and partying!

When he thought dawn was approaching, he remembered his family and girlfriend and realised that they didn’t know where he was. He asked the fairies if he could return home. His wish was granted, and he found himself standing by the lake near Llwyn Onn.

As he walked back up the track towards his farm, he noticed that everything had changed. The trees had grown, the farm building was different and nothing was how he had left it earlier that day.

When he reached the farm door, he was shocked to find his brothers didn’t recognise him at first. They told him that he had been gone for seven years. During that time his parents had passed away and his girlfriend had married another man.

What had seemed like only one night of partying had really been seven long years. The young man never recovered from the loss of his family and the girl he had loved so much. Less than a week after returning home, he died of a broken heart.
