Elizabeth Ann Jones was 100 years old when she died in 1965. Life expectancy in the UK was much shorter then than it is now, and it was rare for anyone to reach 100. When Elizabeth was born in November 1864, girls in England and Wales were expected to live for about 44 years on average.

She grew up in Abergele and moved to Conwy c.1899. She married Post Office engineer Hugh Watkin Jones. They had 10 children. Hugh died aged 46 in 1918 and is also buried here.

Elizabeth outlived three of her children. Her son William George Jones died aged 29 in 1944 and is commemorated on this gravestone. He is buried at Karachi War Cemetery, Pakistan. He died while serving in the Second World War as a Private in the King’s Liverpool Regiment.

At that time, Elizabeth was living at 8 Waen Terrace on Bangor Road (near Ysgol Aberconwy). She was a founder of the Mothers’ Union branch at St Mary’s Church. She died in May 1965.
